Google is the first name that comes in the mind of the most of the people upon hearing the search engine. Biggest search engines such as Google, Yahoo, Bing, Duck-Duck-Go and Baidu have occupied the internet market for years.


Google is an American search engine. Many countries uses Google search engine.


The Chinese uses their indigenously built search engine called “Baidu”.

The Russian also uses their home built search engine called “Yandex”.



But have you ever think about it that why india has not any search engine of it's own? Has india never tried to built it's own search engine? If similar questions appears in your mind, then read this post till the end.



1. Does india have a search engine of it's own?


Yes! India also has its own search engines similar to Google, but they are not well enough developed, like other search engines present in the market, due to which they are not very popular between people and very few people know about them. 


As most of us know that, internet started in India much later than countries like America. The era of internet and search engines started from the 1990s, while in India this phase started after 2005 in a big way. By this time, foreign internet companies has been firmly established their foothold in the Indian market, due to which small Indian companies could not get much opportunity to expand and they could not go much further.

1. Guruji (guruji.com)


Two students from the Indian institute of technology, Delhi. Anurag Dodi and Gaurav Mishra launched the India's first search engine guruji.com  in October 2006.


They established this search engine by taking a fund of 7 million dollars from the famous us funding company sequoia capital.

In this, search engine, they also gave people option to search music and artists. After running for some years, this search engine was shut down in 2011 due to some reasons.



2. 13tabs (13tabs.com)


Two engineer brother sagar and Varun Mishra from Dhanbad launched this indigenous search engine named 13tabs.com in 2016 after 3 years of hard work. Elder brother sagar has done B.tech in electronics and telecommunication from Jaipur. During his engineering studies, he thought of building an Indian search engine. At the same time, his younger brother varun vaso finished his engineering and since then both brothers started making this search engine. At the time of launching in the year 2016, more than 70 million webpages were present in the search engine, whose number has increased today, while at the time of making this search engine, 3 computers of these brothers has crashed.


If you talk about the user experience 13tabs shows very good and relevant search results. Apart from this, 13tabs has a unique features that is fact checker.

13tabs have launched their app official on 9 September 2020.

3. Epic search


Epic search was developed by Hidden reflex ( a software product company founded by Alok Bhardwaj, based in Washington DC and Banglore, India ). Epic search was released on July 15, 2010. It is customized for Indian users. Alok Bhardwaj also launched Browser named Epic Browser which is very privacy centric.


4. Khoj (khoj.com)



123khoj.com is an Indian search engine that was established in 2014 and continues to operate today.

It's interface look same like Google but it's standard is not at all. It doesn't shows very well results.

123khoj.com search engine headquarter is located in Chandigarh.


5. Bilsir


Bilsir.com Is an Indian search engine On which we can search about Hotel, Music, Shopping, Jobs etc. 

Pratik singh is one of the founders of Bilsir search engine. This search engine was established in 2011. 


6. Rediff (rediff.com)


Rediff is an Indian news, shopping and entertainment website and search engine. 


Ajit Balakrishnan is the founder, current chairman and chief executive officer of Rediff.com an internet based company it's headquarters is in Mumbai.

Ajit Balakrishnan holds a bachelor of science from the University of Kerala and a Post graduate diploma in management with master in business studies from India institute of management, Calcutta in 1971.

Ajit Balakrishnan founded rediff.com when he was 22, in 1995 which became very successful in internet site after that it listed in NASDAO in 2001.


7. Justdial (Justdial.com) 


Justdial or JD is local search engine that provides search related services to users across India through multiple platforms such as website, mobile website, App present on ( iOS, Windows, Android ) , over the telephone and via text sms.

Justdial was founded in 1996 by VSS Mani and it's headquarters is located in Mumbai. Justdial has a database of approximately 29.6 million as of June 30, 2020. Justdial has 100 million quarterly users. Justdial provides services all over India across 250+ cities. Justdial own a social sharing platform, and real time chat messenger in a single platform.

Justdial support multiple languages such as English, Hindi and Marathi. Justdial provides digital payments solutions through its JD pay platform.

In 2019 Justdial launched JD social news, live TV and chat messenger on its platform to increase user engagement.




8. Zoolley


Zoolley search engine was started in 2012, by an Alumnus of SRM University, Chennai, Manoj Kumar Mahto. 

Zoolley search engine claims that it is a safe search engine for child and it provides organic and general search results. 

Zoolley has acquired Ayah network London–based advertising technology platform and ad network. 

9. GISASS


GISASS was found in July 2012-13. GISASS is a Indian search engine. 

GISASS also has an Indian web browser name Go Browser. 



10. Ibharat.org



IBharat.org was launched in 2014. IBharat.org is founded by Chandan Jat. iBharat.org search engine has added 1 Lakh web pages on their database and they are adding more everyday. IBharat has added Swadeshi tab on their platform which will give you the information of Indian products. IBharat.org search engine have launched their app on playstor and iOS store. 

Ibharat search engine is designed to gather millions of answers within microseconds in return to the phrases placed in the search bar. Abhik Saha is an Indian entrepreneur, programmer and the founder of Origgon search engine. He launched this search engine when he was just 14. 

Abhik Saha was born on April 24, 2002 in chalsa a small town in the jalpaiguri district of West Bengal. 

Abhik Saha completed his ICSE class X studies in 2017 from Don Bosco school, oodlabari. He was an average Student, until 2011, when he got his hands on his computer that changed his life completely. 

Son of a school teacher, Shefali Saha and Alok Saha, a plywood trader Abhik Saha became interested in programming when he was just 11 years. Abhik Saha created his first very basic antivirus name Seren at the age of 13. 

Abhik Saha has also created his first 2D Game App ‘Bridingo’ on November 2, 2015. After Birdingo five other apps : two education apps Math++ and Abcd planet is a learning app. i-learn, which gives free video tutorials on computer programming or developing language. 3D gaming app, 3D Task 24, and Arnabhik website builder an app that helps people in getting a free hosting website easily. 
Abhik Saha also launched Green culture an agricultural app on April 5, 2016. 

Abhik Saha was the youngest Awardee to receive the Gandhian young Technological Innovation Award (GYTI) award from the president of India on March 19, 2018. 


12. Dwaar

Dwaar was launched in 2008 but it was closed after few years. 

Dwaar was launched by MIH, the India specific search service. Dwaar had 5 categories : search india, cities, restaurant, jobs and Matrimony. 



13. Bhramara


Bhramara was the local language search engine on India. It offered web search interfaces in Kannada and Hindi besides English. 

14. Gladoo 


Gladoo was created by Avake, a software solutions provider it's offices in silicon valley and Noida. 

Gladoo a vertical IT job search engine. It offered single search access to jobs. 


15. Lemmefind.in

Lemmmefind.in is a meta search engine that pulls the results from the 3 of the top search engine Yahoo, MNS and Google. 



16. Byindia.com


Byindia.com offered users to search and text menus in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi and Bengali allowing Indian users to bid online auction, blog, create personal pages, browse classified ads, or post and view video clips in these 5 languages. 

Byindia.com brought every features in one place like jobs, social networking media, video, auction and blog. 

Byindia was acquired by Web2corp in August 2006. 



17. Onyomo


Onyomo is a short for ‘on your move’. 

Shailesh Mehta IIT Delhi alumnus was the founder CEO of onyomo (a local search engine).  

Onyomo was launched in January 2006. It allowed users to search in 13 categories including ATM, restaurants and movies. 



18. Asklaila 


Asklaila was founded by the Bal Krishan Birla in 2006 in Bangalore, India. 

Asklaila has various business across categories like restaurants, school, diagnostic, labs, events, car, dealers, hospitals, fitness center etc. Users can also sign up to create profile, add friends and to review any business or services they have used.
